COMMUNICABLE DISEASES

Children who would be considered contagious must remain at home.  This is not only for your child’s protection, but for prevention of illness to others as well.  The center will notify the parent or guardian of a child’s condition when a child has been observed with the signs and symptoms of illness.

A child with the following symptoms should not come to school:

v    Fever of 100 degrees Fahrenheit or over

v    Diarrhea (more than one abnormally loose stool within a 24 hour period)

v    Vomiting

v    Head lice infestation

v    Skin rashes

v    Discharges or inflamed eyes or ears

v    Persistent or severe cough

v    Sore throat

v    Difficult or rapid breathing

v    Yellowish skin or eyes

v    Untreated infected skin patch(es)

v    Stiff neck

v    Severe coughing, causing the child to become red or blue in the face or to make a whooping sound

v    Illness which prevents the child from participating comfortably in program activities

v    Illness which calls for greater care than the staff can provide without compromising the health or safety of other children

The parent or guardian will be notified immediately when any of the above symptoms appear in their child and the child will need to be picked up.

If the school is unable to contact the parent, the school will call the emergency phone numbers listed on the child’s application form.

If your child contracts a communicable disease, please let us know, in order that we might be aware of the possible outbreak of the disease in school.

HEAD LICE

If a child comes to HELP with head lice, the parents will be notified and must come and pick up the child.  The parents will have to treat the child for a minimum of three days.  On the fourth day, the child may return to HELP once the child has passed a visual inspection by a staff member.  If the same child comes back to HELP with head lice, the child must be treated for five days before the child may return.  The third occurrence the parents will be accessed a fee of $100.00 to defray the cost of cleanup and extermination.  This procedure follows Illinois State policies.

MEDICATION

We do administer medications.  A medication form must be filled out for each medication and with the following information:

Ø     Child’s name

Ø     Name of medication

Ø     Medicine dosage

Ø     Time medicine is to be given

Ø     Days it is to be given (Mon.-Fri.)

Ø     Parents signature

If the form is not filled out, then the medicine will not be given to the child.  A new form will need to be filled out each week.

STAFF ILLNESS

Staff members who contact a communicable disease will, themselves, remain at home until they are no longer contagious.  A substitute will take over the staff member’s duties until the person is able to return.
